Widely regarded as the Queen of Sarees, Kanjivaram sarees are known for its elegance, shimmer and purity. The famous weaving communities of Andhra Pradesh, Devangas and Saligars migrated to Kanchipuram in 15th century and they started producing Kanjivaram sarees with designs inspired by the temple sculptures.
The weaving process starts with dipping the Mulberry silk thread in rice water and they're sun dried. Kanjivaram sarees are woven in double warp and double wept which eventually make them sturdy. The pallu, borders and body of the saree will be woven separately and are woven together. This process is also termed as 'Korvai' weaving.
Pure Gold and Silver zari are used in weaving process where silver zari is woven first and then coated with gold. Initially, these sarees were woven as 9-yards and later 6-yard variant was introduced which became popular eventually.
